Stop Negotiating with Your Calling

Luke 9:59–62 (KJV)

“And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Meditation

God’s call often interrupts the timeline we had planned for ourselves.

The men in Luke 9 did not openly refuse to follow Jesus. Their responses sounded reasonable.

“Lord, suffer me first.”

“Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first.”

They intended to obey—after something else had been settled.

But Jesus exposed the danger of placing conditions before obedience. The issue was not whether their concerns appeared legitimate. The issue was that something else had been given priority over the call of the Kingdom.

We often negotiate with God in the same way.

I will obey when I feel prepared.

I will begin when I have more resources.

I will speak when I feel confident.

I will move when the circumstances become easier.

We may believe God is waiting for us to become ready when He is waiting for us to become willing.

Willing to begin before everything is perfect.

Willing to obey with what is already in our hands.

Willing to follow without continually looking backward.

The call does not require that you understand every step before taking the first one. It requires faithfulness to the instruction God has already given.

Delayed obedience can disguise itself as wisdom, preparation, or responsibility. But when God has spoken clearly, continued negotiation becomes resistance.

The choice has not been taken away.

The excuses have.

Put your hand to the plough.

Keep your eyes upon the King.

Stop negotiating with your calling.

Ruminate

What condition have I placed upon my obedience, and what has God already placed in my hand that I must begin using?

Prayer

Father,

Forgive me for placing conditions upon the obedience You require.

Reveal every excuse, fear, and delay that I have allowed to stand between Your instruction and my response.

Make me willing to obey You with what is already in my hand.

Give me courage to begin before everything feels perfect and faith to continue without looking backward.

Teach me to place the call of Your Kingdom above my comfort, timing, and personal preferences.

My answer is yes, Lord.
